BYOK (bring your own key): the principle of connecting your own AI service key and paying the service directly.

E2EE (end-to-end encryption): data is encrypted on your device and decrypted only on your devices. The sync storage sees only encrypted bytes.

API key: a secret string from the AI service's account by which it recognizes you and bills you.

Workspace: your encrypted base in MindDuck: all chats, documents, facts and settings. Every device keeps its own copy.

Account (MindDuck account): one account by email on mindduck.app and in the app. It holds your access (the beta, a trial or a license) and the device list, but not the workspace. Signing in in the app is confirmed separately through Settings → Account → Sign in.

Google account: connected through Connect Drive for sync. Its email can differ from your MindDuck email. All devices of one workspace need the same Google account.

Memory: everything the assistant can find and use when answering: chats, documents, facts, image descriptions, summaries and topics.

Fact: a short statement of three parts (Subject, Relationship, Detail) the assistant uses in suitable conversations.

Project: a separate area of context with its own chats, documents, facts and description.

Private chat / document: stays with you but doesn't get into the assistant's memory.

Provider: an AI service that offers models: OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI and others.

MCP (Model Context Protocol): a common standard by which AI apps connect tools of other programs: files, a browser, Blender, Unity, notes.

MCP server: a program or network service that provides such tools. You install it; MindDuck connects to it.

Tool: a single action of a server, such as "read a file" or "open a page". For each tool you choose Always allow, Ask or Off.

Chat model: the model that answers your messages.

Background model: the model that writes chat titles, summaries and topics in the background.

Context: everything the model receives along with your question: the conversation history, the memory fragments found, facts, instructions. Every model has a context limit.

Token: the unit of text in which models count volume and price. On average it's part of a word.

Summary: the condensed content of the older part of a long conversation.

Topic: a stretch of a conversation about one subject. Topics help you find your way in long chats and find them in search.

Search index: encrypted data on the device that MindDuck uses to search by meaning.

Shared search data: a block on the Sync & backup screen showing how ready search data is exchanged between devices.

Recovery code: a long random phrase that opens the workspace on a new device when the old ones are gone.

Sign-in code from the email: a one-time code for your MindDuck account. It doesn't replace the recovery code and doesn't open the workspace.

Backup: a .mindduckbackup file with this device's entire workspace at the moment it was made.
