A project is a separate area of context: chats, documents and facts that belong to one undertaking. For example, "Apartment renovation", "Thesis", "Work".

Why it's useful:

  • Project facts are used only in its chats and don't get in the way of other conversations.
  • The project description is passed to the assistant in the project's chats. Write what the project is about and what's important to know, and you won't have to explain it in every chat.
  • Everything related to the undertaking is gathered on one page.

Create a project

  • In the sidebar, in the Projects section, click Create project.
  • Or Memory → Projects → New project.

Give it a name and, if you like, a description (What this project is for).

The project page

On the project page:

  • Chats: the project's chats with search and a date filter;
  • Facts: the project's facts. In the expanded section the Remember fact button adds a fact straight to this project;
  • Documents: the project's documents. In the expanded section the New document and Import buttons add a document straight to this project;
  • Folders: folders on disk the assistant works with in the project's chats (see below);
  • Start a new chat in project: start a new chat right in the project.

The name and description are changed through Edit project settings.

Project folders

The assistant can read files from the project's folders: search them, open text, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PDFs. The files stay where they are; MindDuck doesn't copy them.

  1. On the project page, in the Folders section, click Add folder and choose a folder. The folder's name becomes its name in the project.
  2. By default the assistant only reads. Allow changes (you approve each one) lets it suggest changes: create, edit, move or delete a file. Each change is shown as a card in the chat; for edits, line by line what was and what will be. You apply it; after applying there is Undo. A deleted file isn't erased but kept in the app's backup.
  3. Also in chats without a project makes the folder available in regular chats as well.

A project folder is one on all devices, but where it lives is chosen on each device separately: paths differ between computers. On another device such a folder sits in the collapsed On other devices list: greyed out, for information only, with the name of the device where it was chosen; there it can be neither changed nor deleted. If the same folder is available on this device too, click Use here…. Until the folder is chosen, the assistant doesn't see it.

If you Unlink a folder on the last device, MindDuck asks whether to delete it completely. A folder that isn't chosen on any device (for example, the device was disconnected in Devices) is shown on all devices as Not linked on any device: you can choose it again or delete it. MindDuck doesn't move the files themselves between devices: if they need to match, use Dropbox, OneDrive, Git or another method you're used to.

All folders are visible at once in Settings → Folders (#/folders): project folders, folders for chats without a project and folders opened in individual chats. It also shows which chats a folder is open in, and you can remove access (Turn off in this chat). You can also turn a folder on or off for one chat right at the input field, see Project and folders at the input field.

Service and secret files are off limits to the assistant: .git, node_modules, .env, keys (.pem, .key and similar). It cannot run files.

Folders on a phone and tablet

On Android, iPhone and iPad a folder is chosen in the system folder picker, and the system remembers the permission for MindDuck: after a restart you don't need to choose it again. The list shows the folder's name instead of a path. Unlink returns the permission to the system.

  • Android. The system doesn't allow choosing some places, such as the root of internal storage, the whole Download folder or apps' system folders: choose a folder inside them. File access goes through the system, so searching a large folder is noticeably slower than on a computer.
  • iPhone and iPad. Folders from the Files app work, including iCloud Drive. iCloud files not yet downloaded to the device can be read by the assistant only after the system downloads them: open the folder in Files if a file isn't found.

Add to a project

  • A chat: drag it onto the project in the sidebar or choose the project in Move to project (in the chat settings or the chat details in the header).
  • A document: create or import it on the project page (New document, Import), or choose the project when creating or importing in the library or in the document's properties (Edit details).
  • A fact: click Remember fact on the project page, choose the project when creating it in Memory → Facts or click Move in the fact's properties.

Delete a project

Edit project settings → Delete project… The project and its facts go to the trash and are deleted for good after 30 days. For the project's chats and documents you can choose:

  • Also move … to Trash: send them to the trash together with the project and restore them together with it;
  • or keep them: they stay available without a project. If you restore the project, it picks them up again unless you moved them elsewhere.

If, when restoring, the name is already taken by another project, MindDuck asks you to choose a new one.
