Documents are texts kept in memory next to your chats: notes, drafts, instructions, imported files. The assistant can find, read and edit them.
Create a document
Click New document in Memory → Documents, in the Documents section of a project page or on the chat's context panel. Enter a title, a project (optional) and the text, then click Create.
While you write, the text is saved to a draft on this device (Draft kept on this device). Cancel closes the form, but the draft stays until you open it next time; Discard draft deletes it. If the app closed, the form offers Restore text or Discard it.
The assistant creates documents too: ask it to "save the plan to a document".
Import a file
Import in the document library or on a project page (then the document goes into that project). MindDuck creates an editable copy and leaves the original file unchanged.
- TXT, MD, MARKDOWN in UTF-8.
- Word (.docx): headings, lists, paragraphs and tables; formatting and images aren't carried over.
- Excel (.xlsx): each sheet becomes a table (up to 2,000 rows and 60 columns). Formulas come over as their last calculated values, and dates may look like numbers. Save old .doc and .xls files in the new format first.
- PDF: the text of the pages is taken; PDFs without a text layer can't be imported. The original opens with the Open original PDF button on the device where it was imported.
You can use the document right away; it gets ready for search in the background.
Editor
Documents are written in Markdown. Headings, lists, tables and emphasis show up right away, and the formatting toolbar saves you from remembering the markup.
- A new version is created with the Save now button. If you close with unsaved changes, MindDuck asks: Save and close, Discard changes or Continue editing.
- Unsaved text is kept in a draft on this device (Draft kept on this device). If the app closed, the document offers Restore text or Discard it.
- The expanded mode button hides everything else so you can write without distractions.
- Edit details: the title and project.
Links to chats and documents
You can insert a link to a chat, a single message or another document into a document. It's handy for notes: "we decided it here" and a link to the conversation.
- Insert. Type
[[or click Link to a chat or document on the formatting toolbar. A search over chats and documents opens; pick what you need, and a link with its title appears in the text. - Copy a ready link. Copy link in the chat settings or the Copy link to message button on a message copies a link you can then paste into the document.
- Open. Ctrl+click (⌘+click on a Mac) or the Open ↗ button above the cursor, which is handy on a phone. In a read-only document a regular click is enough. Links to chats, messages and documents open in MindDuck, regular web addresses open in the browser (Open in browser ↗). Other kinds of links don't open.
- If the source was deleted, the link is struck through and its tooltip says No longer exists in this workspace.
Links the assistant writes into a document become such titled links too.
Inside they are regular Markdown links like mindduck://chat/…, and on export
only their label remains.
Versions
Every save creates a new version. Version history shows all versions. View and compare opens an old version next to the current one, Restore as new revision brings its text back as a new version. Nothing is lost.
Conflicts between devices
If a document was changed on two devices at the same time, MindDuck keeps both variants and shows Conflicting document changes. Click Compare and resolve: the current version is on the left, the alternative on the right. Take one of them as a whole (Use current / Use alternative) or put together the final text yourself in Final merged content and click Save merged revision.
Private document
The AI access switch → Keep it private. The assistant won't search, read or use the document in conversations. It stays in the library, marked Private · excluded from AI.
Export
Export in a document saves the open version:
- Markdown (.md): the exact text;
- Text (.txt): text without markup;
- Generate PDF (.pdf): A4 pages, without images.
Deleting
Delete sends the document to the trash for 30 days. See Trash.
Searching the library
Search by title, filter by project and by date changed. Search inside documents is in Memory search.
