Memory search looks through all chats, documents, image descriptions, summaries and conversation topics at once. It understands the meaning of a query, so it finds what you need even when you don't remember the exact words: the query "where did we want to go in summer" finds the conversation about a holiday in Georgia.

Search runs on the device. The query isn't sent anywhere, no internet is needed and no model is involved. The exception is the Best matches tab, see below.

Modes

  • Hybrid: by words and by meaning at the same time. Fits almost always.
  • Exact words: exact word matches only. For names, numbers, codes, rare terms.
  • Meaning: by meaning only, ignoring exact words.
  • Best matches: search looks wider (up to 120 nearest results), then an AI relevance check reads them and keeps up to 20: first the ones that answer the query (Answers the query), then the ones on the same subject (Related). The query and the fragments found are sent to OpenRouter with your key, so you need an OpenRouter key in Models. The check runs only when you open the tab and takes about a second. If smart memory selection is turned Off in Settings → Assistant, the tab says so and sends nothing.

Filters

The Filters button:

  • Record type: where to search: Messages, Chat titles, Documents, Images, Summaries, Topics;
  • Author: whose messages: You or Assistant;
  • Chat: only in one chat;
  • Date: Today, Past 7 days, Past 30 days, Past year or Custom range.

The chosen filters are shown above the results. Clear all resets them all at once.

Results

Each result shows where the match was found: Found in chat title, Found in document, Found by topic, Found by summary, Found in source text, Found in image description. Open source opens the chat at the right message or the document at the right place. Images show a preview.

If there are many results, Load more results is at the bottom.

Why something isn't found

  • The index is still being built. After an import, connecting a new device or adding a large document, search by meaning becomes complete only after a while. See Local search index.
  • The chat or document is private. Private chats are found by the sidebar search, but not in the assistant's memory.
  • The item is in the trash. The trash isn't searched.
  • The image isn't described. Imported images are found only by file name until you start describing them. See Image descriptions.
